GOLA NATIONAL RAINFOREST
Gola Rainforest National Park is an extraordinary ecological haven situated in Sierra Leone, spanning over 70,000 hectares. This expansive area is divided into three key sections: Gola North, Central, and South, and is nestled within seven chiefdoms that collectively support a population of about 140,000 people.
As a crucial remnant of the Upper Guinean Rainforest, Gola Rainforest National Park plays a vital role in preserving biodiversity. It is home to over 300 species of birds and a rich variety of mammals, including the elusive pygmy hippo, chimpanzees, and forest elephants. Notably, the park harbors 12 species of rare and threatened primates, such as the critically endangered Western Chimpanzee.
In addition to its avian and primate residents, Gola Rainforest boasts around 155 mammal species in total, including the unique Jentink’s and Zebra Duikers, as well as the endangered African Forest Elephant. Surveys have also uncovered signs of leopards within the park, emphasizing its significance as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife. Gola Rainforest National Park not only serves as a critical area for conservation but also offers an unparalleled opportunity for exploration and appreciation of its lush, vibrant landscapes.
Visitors can embark on guided hikes to explore the diverse landscapes and spot rare species of plants and animals.
